When scouting linebackers, the number one trait I will look for is their ability to accurately and consistently diagnose the action.  The first 2-3 steps post-snap can make or break their impact in any situation.  A linebacker can have all the size, speed, and strength in the world but if they have a hard time with the mental part of the game, it simply won’t work.  Enter Drew Lewis, the son of former pro football player Will and the former Director of Scouting for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Drew is the brother of Patriots CB Ryan Lewis and the cousin of ESPN analyst Louis Riddick.  This is a kid that comes from a major football family and it shows on the field.  He was a very accomplished track athlete in high school in addition to receiving a football scholarship to Washington.  After his redshirt season in 2014, Lewis transferred to junior college.  He then found himself at Colorado in 2016 where he saw some rotational and special teams duty.  Last season was his coming out party.  The speedster with a good football brain started every game and led the team with 119 tackles, good for second in the Pac 12.  His 2018 spring strength and conditioning testing jumped off the charts, and he could be primed for a huge year.

Lewis’ background definitely helps him understand the game from a broad perspective, perfect for the weak side linebacker spot.  He anticipates the action very well which aids him getting to the action inside and outside. He is a tough target for linemen to reach with that combination of instincts and speed.  If Lewis does get interaction with a blocker, he gets overwhelmed.  He is at his best in space where that speed can take over and pursue the ball carrier.  He looks comfortable and confident in coverage, keep his head on a swivel with light feet and efficient changes of direction.  Lewis is an every-down defender in 4-3 schemes.
