Watching the Ohio State defense is similar to the feeling I had watching the Alabama defenses over the past few years. There are pro prospects everywhere and even further, multiple first round players everywhere. The names over the past few seasons on that Buckeyes' defense were elite and it can be easy to overlook a prospect who simply doesn’t get a ton of hype or even playing time because of what is ahead of him. The fourth year senior has never been more than Honorable Mention on the All Big 10 squads but he may warrant more attention from scouts than almost every defender on that unit.
What He Does Well:
The frame and athleticism scream upside and “What if”? Drafting is very much about future ability and potential once an NFL coaching staff can get their hands on. The excitement generated by the presence of a young player with the tools that Holmes possesses can make any defensive line coach excited to come to work. He already turns speed to power, delivering a violent punch to a blocker on contact. He can stand a man up and show surprising short area quick twitch and long stride speed in space. With that blend of size, speed, and strength, a case can be made Holmes has the highest upside of all the edge rushers in this class and can also add versatility as an inside rusher.
Where He Needs Work:
Holmes has the goods but has yet to really put things together on a consistent basis. His skill set is still very much a work in progress when it comes to his hands and feet playing together. He spends too much time trying to regain his balance and he is often a step late when it comes to mental and physical reaction. Those lost seconds of hesitation can ruin a player who needs to make a living in the trenches.
