Darius Phillips will be considered one of the top returners in this draft class, as his career production in that role has reached historic levels. The 2016 MAC Special Teams Player of the Year also found himself on the First Team All Conference squad as a cornerback. His production from that spot is among the all-time leaders in school history and the NFL decision makers will see a prospect who can help their team in multiple ways. There have been comparisons to Devin Hester by some, as the former wide receiver could warrant a day two pick on playmaking potential alone.
What He Does Well
Phillips will grade out in the top tier when it comes to quickness and agility. He projects as a slot corner where he can stick to the shifty route runners and jump on quick throws. He shows very good anticipation and instincts right off the snap and understands how to twist and turn his body to get his hands on the ball without drawing penalties. Phillips has a knack for making plays on the ball, with 39 pass break ups and 12 interceptions over his career to this point. As a returner, he shows vision, patience, and explosion all at high levels. He can find the small crease and burst through it. Once in the open field, he will not be caught from behind.
Where He Needs Work:
Phillips has a slight frame and there isn’t a lot of physical presence to his game. He relies so much on movement to a point where his ability in press coverage is nearly non-existent. Phillips won’t make much of an impact as a run defender, as he seems hesitant to really throw his hat into traffic and often dives at the ankles of downhill ball carriers. Phillips will also lose track of what is going on around him in coverage at times. He can be fooled by the quarterback’s eyes because of his strong desire to make the big play.
