Three year starter. First-team All-Big 10 the past two years. Consensus All-America and Big 10 Linebacker of the Year in 2023. Ideal size for the position, he displays enough athleticism, a high motor and a physical presence. He’s instinctive and quick with read and react. Consistently locates the ball and gets downhill in a hurry. Can beat a block to the point of attack. Has alley to alley range and takes solid angles to the ball. Adept at working laterally and squaring up ball carriers in the alley. Strong with his hands he takes on blocks aggressively with powerful knee bend. Can take on bigger blockers. Quick to separate and shed on the move, he shows a sense of urgency to get to the ball. Powerful tackler he gathers to balance quickly and drives through tackles. Solid blitzer he’s quick anticipating an inside gap and is aggressive getting upfield. Solid to chase scrambling quarterbacks. Flashed zone coverage ability. Normally gets depth of drop with vision to see threats and communicate crossers. Usually in position and is solid rerouting seam releases. Shows a burst breaking with the ball in the air. Limited in man coverage as he was often a blitzer or pressure rusher. Lacks extended speed to consistently make plays on the sideline. His change of direction is average and is vulnerable to cutbacks. Play action gives him trouble as he often is slow to recognize play fakes. He occasionally misreads and gets on the wrong side of a block. He can get hung up at times as he’s not one to slip blocks. Did not have the kind of season in 2023 he did the previous year as he missed some time. Has starting potential but there will be different views on how he fits.
