Junior-entry, three-year starter. Second-team All-America last season by CFN and honorable mention by Phil Steele, Three-time All-Pac 12 selection including first-team in 2023. Utilized at both safety positions and at nickel in a Utah defense that utilizes a healthy mix of one-high and two-high coverages. Possesses excellent height and good weight. Good athletic ability with a combination of foot quickness, balance, and acceleration. Great instincts as a high defender to read quarterback intentions, weaves with his eyes, and breaks rapidly as the ball comes out. Good foot speed and range as a sideline-to-sideline defender. Able to mirror tight ends attacking him vertically with solid change-of-direction skills and agility. A reliable tackler in space as the last line of defense and uses proper technique. Physical at the point-of-attack when setting an edge. Constricts lanes in run support and will bring down ball carriers who show up in his gap. Adds value as a blitzer off the edge with considerable bend. A high effort player in pursuit and always looks to punch the ball out on tackle attempts. Needs to improve his angles in all aspects of his play; must learn to judge the quarterback’s windup and pass trajectory to take accurate angles to the ball while it is in the air. Often over pursues ball carriers when coming downhill at an angle to tackle allowing easy cutback opportunities. Sloppy technique in man coverage; opens up too late, adequate footwork, soft jam at the line-of-scrimmage, and too often allows wide receivers and athletic tight ends to get around him untouched at the release. Needs to work on his t-step to break downhill more efficiently; often u-steps and rounds his break which causes him to be late when attempting to break up a pass.
