Five-year starter. Paul started just five games over his first two seasons, the second of which ended early because of an ankle/foot injury. The brother of Commanders’ guard Chris Paul, Patrick is a long-armed and athletic piece of clay that needs extra development. If he reaches the upside that his rare blend of tools presents, this is a guy who can man the left tackle island at a high level for a long time. He has the kind of frame that can make up for a lot of losses. He takes up so much space and moves well when it is planned. The issues arise when he needs to adjust his weight laterally, as the stability in his hips and overall coordination look young and raw. Comes across like someone who is still learning himself physically but can still hack it while he improves the skill set in a rare-sized frame. Elite length that he understands how to use. Quality knee bend capability that can be inconsistent at times but is naturally there. Will sink his hips when he gets locked up with a bull rusher. Can widen his base and screw his feet into the ground. Strong hands will lock on and stay attached. Remains on his feet. Quality straight-line athlete. Needs to play with more aggression, need to see him block more intention especially in the run game. Pad level can be inconsistent when firing off the ball laterally. Hands are too wide and will be a penalty waiting to happen. Too much wind up rather than jabbing the pass rusher. Does not always see or anticipate the complex schemes defenses will throw at him. Paul is a very experienced player who has shown tremendous improvements over his career but still has vital components to the game to clean up and if he does, he can be a high-quality starting tackle that specializes in pass protection.
