Junior entry, two-year starter. An accomplished lacrosse and hockey player in high school, McCarthy spent one season as a backup before winning the starting job in 2022 and eventually ascending to a National Champion and Manning Award finalist. He went 27-1 as a starter and set program single-season records in interception rate and completion percentage. Playing in a pro-style offense under Jim Harbaugh that was built on a power run game, McCarthy did not have to carry the team week in, week out. His dropback volume and overall need to spray it all over the field did not reach the level of most others at the position. When it mattered, however, he showed clutch genes and dependable play. He is a very mature 21-year old who is still only scratching the surface of what he can become. Focusing on what he does well in big moments on the national stage gives the notion he can handle the pressure, literally and figuratively, of leading a team from under center. The fact he did not have to throw the ball as often can leave his projection a bit gray and his body type can cause some concern. However, considering how much this position is based on what goes on between the ears along with an ability to be a dual threat, McCarthy is set up for success at the next level and has several key variables made clear. Athletic and easy-moving lower half that can get his feet off the ground rapidly. Sudden change of direction pairs well with his ability to process information. Uses mobility to open up new passing opportunities, keeps the eyes downfield. Accurate on the move in either direction. Excels at keeping an arc against pressure, angling backwards at first and circling his way back toward the line of scrimmage with two hands on the ball and hips ready to fire. Ball placement stands out when evading pressure, notably when he moves left. Creates velocity from his lower half, very torquey throwing motion. Excels in high-pressure moments. Raises his level of play with pass rushers bearing down on him. Small frame with a skinny lower half and lack of core strength. Will have a hard time breaking through heavy contact from pass rushers. Release is long, using a full body wind up with the ball starting at his waist. Does not adjust his arm angles well and struggles to layer properly. Risk taker who got away with balls into traffic across the field. Does not always anticipate or see backside defenders. Has the mental and emotional weapons to get the most out of himself. His arm talent is more than good enough to make all the throws at a high level to be a quality dual threat starter that raises the level of play of those around him.
