Two-year starter, Plaquemine, LA. First team All-ACC in 2021. Was a receiver and quarterback in high school but once he moved on to Virginia he stayed on the outside. He missed all of 2020 with a stubborn, slow-healing Lisfranc injury in his right foot. Came back onto the scene aggressively the next year, setting a school record with 1,203 yards. The 21.1 yards per catch showed off his big play potential and runaway speed. Pair that with his size and the outlook on him heading into 2022 was as high as any senior receiver in the nation. He did not elevate his game and wasn’t able to match what he did in 2021. The tools are attractive, and he does have a full season of elite-level production. Strongly built from head to toe. Functional thickness that provides burst and stability. Long arms and an ultra-wide wingspan for the position. Will provide a huge radius. Good enough build up speed down the field to lengthen separation. Explosive burst gets him open on quick slants. Tracks the ball over his shoulder well and can swallow the ball with his hands. Needs to be faster off the jam. Gets hung up and takes too many steps. Significant drop issue that traces back entire career but peaked in 2022 finishing top three in the country. Tends to be a body catcher and trap the ball. Tight hips will give him issues on certain portions of the route tree. Wicks has enough talent to look like a starting receiver at times, but the drop issues and tightness will be high hurdles to get over. The risk is there, but so is the potential high reward.
