Three year starter, Malaeimi, American Samoa. Second team All-Pac 12 in 2022. Big physical inside linebacker with a strong upper and lower body. The definition of an aggressive downhill linebacker. Attacks blocks with knee bend and brute power. Stuns with his hands creating immediate separation to quickly shed. Can run through blocks to get to a ball carrier inline. At his best as an alley to alley defender with solid inside run fits and downhill reactions. Has racked up a lot of tackles close to the line and in the backfield. Solid blitz skill he hits gaps with a burst and can easily blow up backs in pass protection. Has chase ability behind the line as he adjusts well to scrambling quarterbacks. In coverage shows ability to process route combinations and find the throwing lane. Has enough speed to take a tight end up the seam. Flashes ability to match backs on flat and wheel routes. Has some problems covering shifty backs as he can get separated on route breaks. Lateral movement can be segmented at times causing late reactions in space. His aggressive play occasionally creates bad pursuit angles leading to overrunning tackles. Last fall he had more missed tackles than usual as he struggled to make plays in space. Some hesitation at times showed in his game and his production slipped. He played better as the season progressed but there was some inconsistency. The tools are there to be a solid traditional run stuffing Mike linebacker in a 4-3 or 3-4. In the right scheme he can be an every down linebacker but will need to play under control and improve consistency. His aggressive demeanor should play well on special teams as he develops.
