Three year starter, Tulsa, OK. Second team All-SEC in 2022. Underrated edge defender with ideal size and length. Plays with a high motor and explosive power. Has aligned as five and wide nine technique in a three and two point stance. Uses heavy hands and knee bend when attacking blocks. Quick at the snap he shoots his hands with a jolt into blockers’ numbers getting his pads low. Effective getting under blockers to knock them off balance. Can separate quickly coming off the block to find the ball. Splits double teams and is adept at setting the edge. Regularly blows up tight ends. Difficult to get around and flashes lateral agility to make plays on the perimeter. Classic tackling skill with bend, wrap and drive. As a pass rusher relies on power to go with a sudden pop with his hands. Can bull rush into a move or run the edge. Effective with arms knocking blockers hands away and using an arm over or under to escape. Shows bend around the corner to the quarterback. Chases quarterbacks with relentless motor. Using his long arms he can get the ball out hitting the quarterback’s arm coming around the corner. With his height has some trouble getting upright if initial jolt is a stalemate. At times gets too far upfield against the run and is prone to getting trapped. Overruns the quarterback at times when he steps up and is ridden out of the play. Could use more consistency using his power to squeeze to the quarterback to adjust to depth of drop. Needs some refinement in pass rush arsenal including developing counter moves. With a loaded edge class, McGuire is easy to overlook but with his tools he won’t be ignored.
