Junior entry, two year starter, Ponchatoula, LA. First team All-AAC in 2022 and won the AAC Player of the Year award, the first time a non-quarterback has taken home the hardware. Missed most of the 2020 season with a torn ACL and then bounced back with just under 2,500 yards on just 360 carries (6.8 avg) in two years. This is a big play back with elite burst, balance, and runaway speed. The size and bendiness make him a weapon after contact, and he was among the nation’s leaders in explosive runs. Equally experienced in zone and gap concepts. Can afford to be patient because of how abruptly he can reach his top gear. Shoots out of the cannon with minimal wasted steps or motion. Flexible, but stable lower half that can twist and turn with ease. Can build separation from pursuing defenders in the open field. Physical and aggressive nature show up as a blocker and ball carrier alike. Flashes ability to get yards after contact. Plus receiver with soft hands. Carries the football with his right-hand only, an issue on runs to the left. Ball security habits will need to change at the next level. Does not have the power to push piles. Spears is an ideal complement to a power back and fit into any scheme. Frame might not be able to handle a full load. Will be a good secondary threat in the backfield, one that specializes in explosive plays in space.
