Junior entry, three-year starter, Temple, TX. Earned All Big 12 honors all three seasons, first team in both 2021 and 2022. He is a long, strong, explosive talent who has the kind of presence that changes how a defense approaches the passing game. The long strider with elite speed and leaping ability is more than just a physical marvel. He is a tough, hard-nosed, physical gamer who plays bigger than his already-big frame. A menace to tackle with credible runaway speed. He has his top-notch intangibles and physical gifts along with glimpses of domination and production, Johnston has superstar potential. Elite size, has the Avatar body type with hands hanging around his knees, attached to a tall frame which makes his radius enormous. Understands how to use that body to box out defenders. Has a power forward type approach when he goes up and gets it. Excellent downfield ball tracker with good timing and coordination. Has the movement traits of a track star. Powerful, long strides that strike the ground hard and violent. Plays through contact well with strong presence. Has a loose lower half capable of quick in and out breaks. Has tight end-caliber strength with the ball in his hands. Breaks a lot of tackles and does serious damage after the catch. Lacks some of the experience needed to run a quality route tree right away and he has had some concentration drops. Has a hard time running sudden routes. Telegraphs his intentions and does not have a wide arsenal of get-open traits. Needs to separate more. Inconsistent catching mechanics, lets too much into his body. Needs to smooth the edges of his skill set across the board. Has credible number one receiver upside both physically and mentally, but his ascent will require patience as there is still considerable rawness in his game.
