Won the Ted Hendricks Award, awarded to the nation’s top defensive end, Bednarik Award semifinalist, consensus first-team All-America, ACC Defensive Player of the Year, first-team All-ACC, voted permanent team captain, and became Clemson’s first two-time first-team AP All-American since 1981-82. Primarily a defensive end but occasionally used in coverage. Played in both a two and three point stance. Has bulk and length to go with good overall athletic ability. Quick at the snap using his long arms to get immediate separation from a block. Powerful attacking blocks using his hands to get into a blocker. Violently disengages and works to the ball. Solid pass rush technique using combination moves including a bull rush into an arm under. Changes direction well and can close on a scrambling quarterback. Has enough athleticism to cover the hook to flat areas. Good awareness when dropping in coverage. Tough at the point of attack. Plays the edge run well and can make plays in space. Shedding a block is a strength but will get upright at times. Versatile and can be more than an edge rusher. He will fit in most 3-4 schemes but his best attribute is as a pass rusher. Has been putting pressure on quarterbacks from the beginning and has been one of the most consistent edge defenders in the country. Really took his game to another level this past season when it comes to reaction speed and technique. Covers a ton of ground with just a few steps and his inside rush moves to offset that are NFL-caliber right now. Bosa is the top edge guy, but a case can be made that Ferrell has a higher ceiling. 2018 stats: 54 T, 19.5 TFL, 11.5 sacks, 4 PBU, 7 QBH, 3 FF. Edge speed:left 1.99, right 2.06.
