Sam Houston, 6020 199 4.33. Four-year starter, Galveston, TX. First-team All-Southland Conference and second-team AFCA All-America. Impressive combination of speed and height, McCollum has been a dominant FCS corner for the last four seasons. Played a variety of coverage including Cover two, three, quarters and off and press man. In off coverage, shows quick feet in his pedal and stays with his cushion with good matching of the receiver’s speed. Smooth turn and run he doesn’t waste steps. Has the speed to stay in phase on vertical routes. Solid lateral agility he can flip his hips reacting to a route combination. Processes route combinations well in zone and gets a read on the quarterback’s delivery key while balancing receivers. As a press corner, shows mirror ability and can be physical with his jam. Stays in the frame of the receiver in trail and uses his length to cut down the throwing lane. Recovers well if out of position. Excellent ball skills he comes from a distance to high point interceptions and attacks the catch point with leaping ability. Does a nice job in run support with solid square up tackling skill. Gathers, launches and drives through tackles. Decent plant and drive but at times gets hung up gathering and triggering. Will give up too much room on route breaks and give up an easy catch. Has occasional problems reacting up to intermediate comeback routes. Appears to guess on route breaks in press coverage and gets out of position. Will take some time coming out of FCS to adjust to NFL speed but he has the tools to play. His size, ball skills and tackling ability could project him to safety in the long run. Has been outstanding as a gunner on special teams.
