Iowa, 6005 205 4.43. Two-year starter, Tampa, FL. First-team All-Big 10 in 2021. Played a hybrid nickel position in the Hawkeyes’ defense and was outstanding in the role. Played primarily as an overhang player working off the ball outside the box and over tight ends. Has some experience as an over the top safety. At his best as an undercover flat defender. Excellent at closing voids in overlapping zones. Quick to find the throwing lane and impact intermediate passes. Has been productive getting his hands on the ball with quick reactions on the quarterback delivery key. Solid man-to-man cover skills he has the speed to stay in phase with inside receivers and mirror route breaks. Gets to the catch point with ability to get his hands in the basket with the timing to break up the pass. Physical re-routing inside receivers up the seam in zone coverage. Flashes take-on ability in run support and shows tackling skill in space. As a one high safety has the speed, but the farther away from the ball the more problems he has. Angles to the ball are inconsistent and he has problems balancing vertical threats. In run support takes a side and is out of the play. Has trouble with pursuit angles and is slow reacting at times reading run. Has solid tools and been overall effective in his role. Fits with a team looking for a big nickel.
