Western Kentucky, 6032 243 4.65. Four-year starter, Atlanta, GA. Earned All-Conference USA honors his last three seasons. Two-time Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year. Set school records for both sacks and tackles for loss. His 59 career tackles for loss are top ten in FBS history. Athletic with a slender frame, Malone has been a productive pass rusher and chase player in the Western Kentucky defense. Aligned in both a two-and three-point stance he flashes a quick first step shooting his hands into the blocker. Can ride a tight end and shed quickly on the move and slip blocks working to the ball. Has a lateral burst chasing down the line. Disciplined in reactions he stays square on the line working against the read zone. Changes direction quickly and makes plays on the perimeter. As an edge rusher can work the corner and get low bending around the hip of an offensive tackle. Can go wide to run around a tackle and use his length to club the arm of a blocker keeping him off his frame. Shows a quick inside move that has created immediate penetration into the backfield. Limited off the ball and pass cover experience but has the athletic ability to develop. Solid tackling skill he can wrap and drop ball carriers. Occasionally will explode into a tackle without wrapping and miss the tackle. Uses a variety of stances which seem to create some hesitancy at times. Footwork is inconsistent and at times steps with the wrong foot initially causing a false step allowing a blocker to get leverage. Physical and athletic offensive tackles have been able to knock him off the ball and control his pursuit. Needs to add bulk and lower body power if he is to hold up against NFL offensive tackles. Could project off the ball but will need development. Upside as a 3-4 Buck or Leo linebacker and edge rusher. Has tools to play special teams.
