Michigan, 6002 191 4.38. Junior entry, two-year starter, Tulsa OK. First-team All-Big 10 in 2021. Has desired length and versatility as a safety/nickel. Played mostly one high safety prior to 2021. Moved to the nickel or slot corner in new defensive coordinator Mike MacDonald’s defense and excelled. As a one high safety he shows a smooth pedal with fluid transitions in all directions. Easily opens his hips to get over the top of a vertical route. Processes route combinations and is quick to respond to the quarterback’s delivery key. Outstanding range over the top he tracks the ball and attacks the catch point. Playing slot corner as a zone defender he gets under intermediate routes and closes off the throwing lane. Shows a sudden plant and drive reacting to throws in front. Playing man coverage he has the speed to stay with speedy slot receivers up the field. Mirrors route breaks and can undercut to play the ball. Moves well laterally to maintain leverage playing off a vertical release. In run support his downhill quickness puts him in position to make plays at the line. Has range in pursuit and can chase across the field. Takes good angles and flashes wrap up tackling skill. Lacks gather and strike tackling and is more catch and drag. Slips blocks on the move but athletic blockers can ride him out. Needs to be more physical attacking and develop a punch to stack a block. Speed and versatility as well as his history of solid special team play will be attractive to any team. He could immediately step into a starting role at nickel for a team that plays a 4-2-5 as their base. Some teams may view him as a corner.
