Utah, 6026 237 4.66. Junior entry, three-year starter, Chula Vista, CA. Earned All-Pac 12 honors all three seasons, first-team the past two years. A consensus 2021 All-America, Pac 12 Defensive Player of the Year, and AP Defensive Player of the Year. Versatile linebacker prospect who has lined up inside and outside in Utah’s defense. Ideal size for an inside linebacker he has primarily played off the ball inside later in his career. He flashes decent instincts inside and usually fits gaps well. Uses his hands and long arms to stun and separate from a block. Sheds well and rarely stays blocked. Outstanding in chase mode he has lateral quickness, range and takes the right path to the ball. Above average agility he isn’t often fooled in space. Normally shows the ability to gather and tackle, he can make the big hit. Excellent zone defender he shows awareness of multiple routes while getting depth in his drop. Sudden breaking on the ball his length creates problems for quarterbacks as he can find the catch point. Has blitz skill with a quick first step and closing ability in the backfield. Quick with his hands, quarterbacks have a difficult time throwing over him when he closes. Shows occasional hang up redirecting and can get out of position. Some inconsistency tackling as he occasionally leaves his feet on tackles and will miss. Can be overaggressive at times overrunning and taking himself out of the play. Misdirection can give him issues as he isn’t always patient in his read. Solid but not elite athletically. While he has the speed to stay with tight ends and backs he can get separated on quick route breaks. The scheme he plays in should limit those situations. Has some minor holes but he is a complete linebacker that should be an immediate every down starter. Projects well as a Mike linebacker in any scheme.
