Ourlads' Profile:
2021 Guide: What Ourlads' NFL Scouting Services said about DERRICK BARNES: Purdue, 6004 245 4.58. Two year starter, Covington, KY. A versatile player who has been an inside linebacker and edge rusher. His frame fits the profile of an NFL Mike and he may have upped his stock in that role at the Senior Bowl. Quick and powerful with his hands engaging blockers he can stun and separate working to the ball. Fits gaps well play side and shows good lateral movement working outside. Has alley to alley range and takes proper angles to square up ball carriers. Powerful tackling he gathers and drives through to finish. Hustles in pursuit and is consistently around the ball. Limited pass coverage reps he gets depth in his drop and has a decent feel for pattern pressure. Can move laterally to find the throwing lane. Has been a productive situational edge rusher. Quick at the snap he can club a blocker’s arms and bend the corner. Can penetrate inside gaps on stunts and has a burst to close. Off the ball initial reactions inside can be hesitant. Occasional misreads can get him out of position. Some hip tightness limits change of direction and he can struggle with cut backs. If isolated in coverage he has problems reacting to route breaks. Has a unique skill set that will need development at the NFL level. He lacks the length of the traditional edge rusher/Sam and may not be instinctive enough as a three down linebacker. His workout numbers and production can’t be ignored. He could be useful situationally in multiple roles. 2020 stats: 54 T, 5.5 TFL, 1 PBU, 2 QBH, 1 INT. Fifth/sixth round. (A-33, H-9 3/4, BP-29, SS-4.32, VJ-37).
