Ourlads' Profile:

2021 Guide: What Ourlads' NFL Scouting Services said about JAELAN PHILLIPS: Miami, 6050 266 4.58. Junior entry, two-year starter, Redlands, CA. He split his time between UCLA and Miami. Capped off his career with first-team All ACC and an All-America honor. His early years were marred by injuries to both ankles before a serious wrist injury suffered off the field in a traffic accident that required multiple surgeries. Also sustained multiple concussions at UCLA where some doctors urged him to retire. Was out of the game for a few months with the mindset that his career might be over. Then transferred to Miami, sat out all of 2019 while getting his body back together and awaiting medical clearance. He then went on to a breakout year in the shortened 2020 season. Showed some inconsistency early on, but there may not have been a more dominant edge player in the country down the stretch. Over his final four games, he finished with 11 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. Appears to have turned a corner when it comes to his maturity and showed what he can actually do on the field. He is an every down defender capable of being a dominant force if he keeps focused and his body healthy. Tall and long edge presence that comfortably holds NFL-caliber weight for the edge and still has plenty of room for more functional muscle mass. Talented across the board. Easy bend and turn, stemming from quality flexion in his knees and hips. Light on his feet and naturally capable of changing his direction late. Can make himself slippery and skinny as an inside rusher. Used on stunts and twists often, excels against interior blockers. Has evolved with his hand usage and overall technique as a pass rusher. Shows good range and has a wide tackle radius. A finisher if he gets his hands on the ball carrier. Needs to bulk up and put more work in to go along with the naturally talented tool set that made him a 5- star recruit. Plays like a kid that has been too reliant on talent, and not enough on technique. Has a loose temper on the field. Shows some inconsistent body language and effort is streaky. Will over pursue down the line and lose track of outside contain. More reliant on secondary moves and defensive scheme. 2020 stats: 45 T, 15.5 TFL, 8 sacks, 3 PBU, 5 QBH, 1 INT. First round. (A-33 1/4, H-9 3/4, BP-21, 10-1.59).
