Ourlads' Profile:

2021 Guide: What Ourlads' NFL Scouting Services said about MAC JONES: Alabama, 6025 217 4.83. Redshirt junior entry, one-year starter, Jacksonville, FL. Also started four games the year prior when Tua Tagovailoa went down with a season ending hip injury. Could not have put in a better performance in 2020, earning first-team All America and All SEC honors in addition to winning the Davey O’Brien Award. Set an NCAA single season record with a 77.4% completion percentage. While he doesn’t have a ton of starting experience in college, it is hard to argue against what he has accomplished. Has tremendous accuracy on all levels and is far more advanced when it comes to anticipation and throwing his targets open when comparing him to most college quarterbacks. Pinpoint accuracy to all levels of the route tree. Great anticipation to throw his target open. Trustworthy passer who won’t leave his target vulnerable. Knows how to layer the ball through traffic. Timing in the pocket stays consistent. Shows evasive footwork tactics while maintaining eyes downfield. Plays with a nice balance of urgency and patience. Can see the whole field crystal clear while anticipating pressure. Successful deep ball thrower. Excellent ball path and trajectory, makes it a very catchable ball. Quarterback is a result-oriented position in college and the NFL. A prospect must be accurate, make good decisions, and process information like “Beautiful Mind” mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr. There are numerous other critical factors, but the first three are a step in the right direction. Mac Jones went to the pressure cooker at Alabama and not only competed but starred in one of the most storied programs in college football history. He is a stable and confident leader who played under center and in the shotgun. His measurables and athletic ability are above average as is his arm strength. He has the vision to find the open man and distribute the ball to numerous different pass catchers. He is focused and plays in a focused zone with quiet intensity. Cool and efficient. He plays with fast eyes which helps him process information quickly. Keeps his eyes down the field. Deadly accurate on horizontal routes. He was coached to take the easy throws. Doesn’t force the ball down the field. He can pick apart a zone defense. Disciplined enough to take what the defense gives him. Has the patience to let the receivers clear then throws through the seam of the defense. Very cool and poised in the pocket. Not afraid to check it down if his first and second reads are unavailable. During film study it looks impossible to make certain throws, but Jones does it because his ball apparently has eyes. He is a precision passer who waits for the window to open up on slant patterns for instance. That is part of his genius – he makes tough plays look easy. Jones can win the game from the pocket but is mobile enough to run for short yardage first downs. He has good footwork and balance. There is no question that Jones had great receivers including Heisman winner DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle. His accuracy and ball placement gave his receivers a chance to extend plays without breaking stride. At the Senior Bowl practices he laid the ball into everyone’s hands and he had never worked with them before that week. The chart below shows how Jones performed in four games this past season – including the SEC Championship game, the National semi-final game, and the National Championship game. Notable stats: Mississippi: 28/32, 417 yards, 13.0 ypa, 87.5%, 2 TD, 0 INT Florida: 33/43, 418 yds, 9.7 ypa, 76.7%, 5 TD, 1 INT Notre Dame: 25/30, 297 yds, 9.9 ypa, 83.3%, 4 TD, 0 INT Ohio State: 36/45, 464 yds, 10.3 ypa, 80%, 5 TD, 0 INT. Jones was selected as the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year. He graduated in three years with a 4.0 GPA in business communications and earned a master’s degree in sports hospitality. Senior Bowl notes: Showcased a strong Tide career into a solid week in Mobile. Sudden to read and react. Processed information quickly and demonstrated a quick synapse from his brain to his hand. Quick release. When he sees an open receiver he anticipates the window and cuts it loose. Gets the ball out on time. Had no problem during the week learning new terminology and was a leader throughout the week. Good feet in the pocket. Did not play in the game after spraining his left ankle on Thursday. Nice touch on fade and swing routes. Tool rich passer. 2020 stats: 311/402, 4500 yds, 77.4%, 41 TD, 4 INT, 14 yds rushing, 1 TD, 203.06 QB rating. First round. (A-32 1/2, H-9 3/4, SS-4.39, VJ-32).
