Some of the routes taken to a player’s draft story are much more jagged than others. Some come out of high school with their 5 star rating, All American status looking like an NFL player within a year. Others have a few extra pit stops and road blocks to break through but it doesn’t always matter how you got there.
Colorado State’s star receiver Michael Gallup had a very indirect path to where he is now, which is atop the nation’s receiving yards leaders. He was originally recruited by Georgia as a quarterback and that recruitment was headed by the Bulldogs' offensive coordinator at the time, Mike Bobo. Gallup was forced to go the junior college route because of grades and during his time there Bobo left Georgia to become the head coach at Colorado State. These two maintained their relationship and Gallup soon followed.
Gallup is now en route to re-writing the school’s receiving record book and could end up being a 1st round pick in April. His ball skills are top tier, showing easy adjustments to the ball in the air and a pair of hands that are as strong as any in the country. His lower body is a good combination of power, speed, and quickness that helps make him a plus route runner and yard after catch machine. Gallup is a tough, hard nosed player with a skill set that is further developed than most receivers in college. He is an immediate contributor in the NFL.
