Following current Lions' left tackle Taylor Decker’s departure for the NFL via the first round of the 2016 Draft, Jamarco Jones took over the job and appears destined to be the next in line for Buckeye linemen who make it to the next level. The fourth year senior has shown significant improvement across the board in his second year as the starter protecting JT Barrett’s blind side.
What He Does Well
Jones shows consistent and repeatable footwork with his drop kick as a pass blocker. He easily drops back with balance and foot accuracy, leaving him balanced and ready to pounce on his man. He has the proper blend of hand strength, power, and timing to stifle the pass rusher, stand him up, and overtake the control of the engagement. As a run blocker, he shows the pop out of his stance to move defensive ends with consistency, and he will quickly position himself properly to prevent his man from getting into the running lane. The consistency is what is most admirable about his approach. No matter the opponent, game situation, and weather, everything he does looks the same from start to finish. The Ohio State offense demands a lot out of their left tackles and he has been passing every situation with flying colors.
Where He Needs Work
There are times where Jones over-commits to his initial read of the pass blocker. He will get top heavy, losing track of his knee bend while lunging for his man. A pass rusher with quality double moves and instincts can make him look silly. Jones needs to trust his ability to react late instead of always trying to get a head start. The right blend of aggression and patience can be tough to master, and Jones still has a ways to go there.
